Description

For more than a century, the central archaeological museum in Thessaly offers a unique journey which commences from the Paleolithic era and comes up to the Roman Times. Mostly known under the name of the person that funded this establishment, Alexis Athanasakis, a wealthy merchant from Portaria, the Athanasakeion Archaeological Museum in Volos should indispensably be visited.

The exquisite yard and the neoclassic building with Ionic columns predispose immediately for a unique promenade in the history and in the aesthetics for the awe to be verified through the exhibits in the eight spacious rooms in the museum.

First to be visited is the room of Neolithic era with clay constructions (Greek figurines), vases (shell) and daily use tools (bones). Next, the Neolithic settlement appears to enliven through the exhibition of findings made mostly of rock and originated in Dimini and Sesklo, whereas the tombstones, the obvious sign that someone had been buried- that consisted the cause for the museum to be built, in 1908- engross the interest due to the fact that their color has been preserved up to this day.

In the same room the coin “danakes” is found, which leads us to the next room dedicated to the burial customs from the area of Amfanes, Feres and Demetrias the evolution of which can be seen to unfold, while observing findings from vaulted tombs (Iolkos), a domestic shrine (Feres) as well as the Panathenaic Amphora- the trophy for the winners of the races.

However, no description could replace the direct experience.

An ascertainment for the visitor of this considerable museum to make is the “Cook House of Demetrias” where the daily routine of the important Greek city appears to enliven.
