    Description

If a visitor wishes to see a Neolithic settlement, the most appropriate is Dimini, located five kilometers south west of Volos. Close to the current village with the traditional houses, the taverns and the boundless view, the Neolithic Dimini was built at the end of the 5th millennium BC. To come into light by an archaeological excavation from the beginning of the 20th century, that discovered houses among six precincts, which are built in pairs around the hill. Moreover, the continuous excavations have discovered stone and bone tools, figurines and jewellery as well as ceramic art items which are exposed in the Archaeological Museum in Volos. The settlement was abandoned at the beginning of 3000 BC, to be used, since 2000 BC as a cemetery. It is estimated that the settlement existed in the Bronze Age (14th-13th centuries) which as it seems it was totally destroyed by fire at the end of the 13th century and which was rebuilt in the 12th century BC until its definite abandonment.  In this considerable archaeological place, beyond the Mycenaean settlement that was discovered, two big vaulted tombs have recently been found.

    Open

The archaeological Place of Dimini is open daily 8:00-15:00 apart from Monday.
