    Description

    A complex that accommodated the famous tobacco industry in Volos. It was built in three phases. The older building of the complex (1890), a two storey with a semi-basement, (P.Mela & Socratous Streets), the front view of the building B is located in P. Mela (and Ermou Streets) (1918-20), the exterior panels and the ground floor of the building C (P. Mela – Socratous , 1926-28) and the front view of building E in Alexandra Street up to Makedonomahon Street.

    Founder of the historical factory was Nikolaos Matsaggos from Katichori. He started with the tobacco trade and then he founded a tobacco factory, which later became a limited partnership N. Matsaggos & Brothers. In 1925, it employed 350 workers specialized in different positions since the factory disposed a machine shop, α box manufacturing department, a carpentry, a lithographeio and a chemical laboratory. The production reached the 500.000 cigarettes annually and it brought the city of Volos in the first place of the world of industry and commerce. In 1927, he founded the staff welfare fund, which with a small charge, it ensured medical care until the foundation of the Social Insurance Institution was established (1937). In 1940, it constituted of 1050 employees while it produced 250 tons monthly. Between the wars the Matsaggos tobacco industry provided the residents as well as the immigrants in Volos with security and stability. In 1950, the tobacco industry confronts serious economical problems that resulted in the immediate reduction of the employees and consequently in the reduction of its influence in the city of Volos.
