    Description

According to the inscription at the entrance of the temple, the Holy Monastery of Aghios Athanasios dates back in 1817. It is about a men’s monastery, possibly dependent on a monastery in Mount Athos. It is a temple with history, as during the Ottoman Period, it participated in the liberation struggle, where many people found a shelter. It functioned up to the beginning of the 20th century, while in 1954 it was severely damaged, mainly the cells of the Monastery, which were demolished and the church maintained its building.

At the entrance of the temple, the picture saint overlooks, an admirable fresco made by monks of Athos. (The style of the picture is such, that from wherever you look at it, you think that the Saint “is following” you by looking at you.) Moreover, the remains of the last monks are saved at the temple up to this day. On the 18th January, a crowd of believers is gathered to celebrate the memory of Aghios Athanasios and on 2nd May annually a disposing of the remains of the Saint is realized.
