Description

The monastery of Panagia is one of the most beautiful and peaceful spiritual centers and it is located on the top of the mountain. The Holly Monastery was built because of the miracle of finding the picture of Panagia at the root of an olive tree and this is presented on an inscription on the temple church: “Appeared on the 10th September”. This picture has been included in the 16 pictures considered to be miraculous, existing in Greece. It is about a triunity, triconch temple, covered with stones brought from Malta by the captains, with arches and a dome with a shed, built from 1835 to 1837, while the internal space was completed in 1843. The monastery never functioned as one, while the cells host some monks, as well as the residents who were in need or came from the nearby Trikeri for the olive harvest. During the Civil War in and out of the Monastery, 5000 women resided there as political exiles.
