    Description

The history of the Monastery of Taxiarhes, just as most of the old monasteries on Pelion, is lost in the centuries, since there is no formal resource including the date of the initial building or its founder. It was built in the 12th century, with older building renovations in the 18th and the 19th century. Until 1911, it was inhabited by monks; however, since then the monastery was abandoned, deprived of its huge wealth and the numerous dependencies. In 1976, due to nun Theodouli’s wish from Meteora, to live there not caring about the desolation of the Monastery, it began to host nuns.

Nowadays, at the basement of the Monastery there is an ecclesiastical museum, in which there are hosted religious heirlooms, pictures of the 16th century and a Holy Grail from 1490. Moreover, in the Holy Monastery there are the relics of Aghios Merkourios, Aghios Gedeon, the three new martyrs from Mount Athos, Aghios Stamatios, Aghia Paraskevi, as well as of many other saints. It is important to refer that on the 27th May 2005 a replica of Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Paramythia was obtained from Mount Athos.

Moreover, the monastery disposes two temples in the complex of its buildings. A chapel dedicated to Virgin Mary, to the local new martyr Stamatios and to Aghios Nikodimos from Mount Athos and a small chapel honored at the name of Holy Prodromos, Great Antonios and Saint Patapios the Miraculous.
