    Description

A museum made by… Theophilos: Just outside the city of Volos, towards Portaria, and more especially at Anakasia, the Museum dedicated to the well-known artist of the neoclassic history. It is, in deed, the mansion of the wealthy Yannis Kontos who kept under his protection the famous man from Mytilini who lived in Pelion for almost 30 years. His exceptional touches prevail all over the building and make people feel his presence in every corner. The first floor constitutes a real artistic experience which starts from the stairs and leads to the upper part of the residence presenting as background Theophilos’ painting.

The same artist has decorated with his unique talent and style with four Greek Gods: Athena, Ares, Hermes and Aphrodite the four columns of the house respectively. Moreover, the frescos which represent the Revolution in 1821 and that of the area of Anakasia shock. The flowers, the birds, the fish and the other drawings that he added in a scattered way from time to time can be admired as well. The artist, who knew no recognition during his lifetime, had made the portrait of his benefactor, Yannis Kontos.

Apart from Theophilos’ art, it is worth admiring the objects and the artworks that belonged to Kontou family, as well as the two pictures found in the basement.
