    Description

The Town Hall in Volos was not permanently accommodated until 1970, since it was constantly transferred in different buildings. Although it was a constant issue for discussion at the City Councils, a definite decision was never taken. Kitsos Makris, as a City Counselor of that time, suggested architect Demetrios Pikionis, to construct a permanent building for the Town Hall, to which all agreed unanimously. He was a man especially talented with an incredible education and recognized experience, as he was professor in the Technical University. Pikionis started to visit more often the city then, to meet it in a better way, to study the architectural tradition as well as to get inspired by it. The position that the Town Hall was to be built was of great importance to him, who decided that the proper place was Rigas Feraios square. He believed that semantically, apart from the nodal point of the square, it would be acknowledged as a monument. Moreover, he wanted the building to be prominent and to be able to include Pelion variations in its four sides. Of course, the orientation of the building was of primary importance to him, since it had to be turned both to the old and the new city with a future vision.  In 1961, he finished his study, in 1962 the Ministry of Municipal works approved his draft and in 1963, he handed his complete project to the City Council. The erection started in 1969, when Pikionis had died and was completed at the end of 1970, dedicated to his memory. In the Town Hall different permanent exhibitions exist such as: engravings, that A. Tasos created and other considerable Greek artists with topics from the history of the city. Furthermore, there are pictures of the old city of Volos by Stephanos Stournaras.
